Designation of Origin and Wayuu Art: The Mochilas of La Guajira
The Designation of Origin is an indication reserved for products whose quality, fame and characteristics derive mainly from the geographical environment in which they are produced. The mochilas and chinchorros from La Guajira, Wayuu territory, are protected by this designation, as long as they maintain the quality standards that characterize them. LEGADO proudly presents these artifacts as true works of art, expression of the rich Wayuu culture.
The Wayuu, a people who inhabit the La Guajira peninsula on the border between Colombia and Venezuela, define themselves as such, in addition to jealously preserving their cultural and linguistic traditions. The Wayuu women are the custodians and creators of these extraordinary fabrics, which represent a unique cultural heritage.
The kanás, or fabric designs, reflect the ancient art of weaving and tell stories of myths, initiation rites and daily life of the Wayuu community. The mochilas, crocheted in various shapes and sizes, must meet specific criteria to obtain the Denomination of Origin, including the use of specific yarns and attention to detail in the weaving process.
The weaving of the mochilas follows an artisanal method, with the base and the body crocheted using different techniques. The intricate and symbolic designs represent the complexity of Wayuu life and their connection with the surrounding environment. Finally, the handle, a distinctive element of the mochilas, is made with attention to detail and joined to the body with mastery.
