Natural elements are a primary source of inspiration for the creation of handcrafted artifacts in the different cultures and indigenous communities present in Latin American countries. It is important to consider that many of the artistic forms that we admire today are techniques passed down over time, inherited from our origins and developed through generations, using plants, palms, flowers and roots present in the geographical regions where tribes and clans have settled.
One of these palms is the IRACA, which is commonly found in cool environments, near rivers, streams and drained soils, and can grow from 2 to 5 meters tall. Known scientifically as Carludovica Palmata, it is also known as Palma de Iraca, Paja Toquilla, Jipijapa, Cestillo, Lúcuma or Palmiche. The discovery of this palm occurred in Sandoná, in the department of Nariño, in southern Colombia. It is there that the women of the community work with great mysticism and dedication to care for this palm and create hats, bags, baskets and other colorful and sophisticated ornaments, which boast a design and quality unmatched by those produced industrially.
The process begins with the harvesting of the palm, where only the youngest shoots of the plant are selected. Next, the fibers are prepared, which are carefully extracted from the leaves through a process of ribbing and tearing. The fibers are then processed through a series of steps, including cooking, draining, drying, and in some cases, bleaching or smoking to bring out the natural color. Finally, the fibers are dyed using natural dyes such as flowers, before being ready for fabric.
It is important to note that the artisanal process requires great skill and care, as the artisans work with delicacy and precision, moistening their fingers with water to ensure flexibility during the weaving. The artifacts produced through this process are not only unique and unrepeatable, but have a perfection that seems almost three-dimensional, without any obvious defects.
In an age of mass production, it is astonishing to observe how these women are able to create everyday works of art, resistant over time and always current. Manual work represents not only an eternal legacy, but also a symbol of resistance to the standardization of industrial production.
